Book Review: Darkness of Light (Darkness #1) by Stacey Marie Brown

4.5 gems

darkness in light

Ember Brycin was the school wierdo thanks to her natural jet black hair with red streaks and her eyes: one was “bright yellow greenish illuminated like a cat’s eye” and the other “pale blue lavender outlined with electric dark blue and purple.” This makes her stand out and more often than not, she finds herself in the middle of trouble. It doesn’t help that the local sheriff, Sheriff Weiss and her school principal Mitchell are out to get her and blame all that goes wrong in the school, namely the electrical explosions, on her.

Her sarcastic attitude along with the fact that she is always in trouble leads to the principal and the sheriff deciding on sending her to Silverwood Academy, a school for the troubled. There she meets the ever elusive, dark and dangerous and stupendously hot Eli Dragen. He takes an instant dislike to Ember for reasons unknown.

Let’s not forget the mysterious but charming and handsome Torin, who visits Ember in her dreams claiming to help her. No one is what they seem to be including Ember and the people around her. She does not know what she is and those who do are not really friends. Ember has a hard time recognising who her true allies her. Her unexplainable attraction to Eli does not help things.

The author keeps Ember’s true identity a secret until the end, and when it is finally revealed, things take a different turn. The book is well written with great characters. It is fast paced and easy to read. The banter between Eli and Ember is fun as well as full of their repressed sexual tension. Join Ember on her journey into finding out her true identity and her true allies. This book has easily made it’s way into my top favourites. I can hardly wait to get on with the series. Not to mention it is hard not to pick up the next book as soon as you finish the first one. Afterall the author does leave you curious as to what happens next.
